Experience the Best of Whale Season on Oahu
Looking for fun things to do on your Oahu vacation? Oahu is one of the best places in the world to go whale watching. What a fun, unique activity to add to your itinerary!
If you’ve never been whale watching before and don’t know what to expect, don’t worry! We have you covered. Here’s everything you need to know to experience the best of whale season on Oahu.
When is Whale Season on Oahu?
Whale-watching season kicks off in late fall and runs through early spring. The first North Pacific humpback whales arrive in Hawaii from Alaska in October and November. Spotting them breaching the water can be tricky during these months, but by December, sightings become easier as more whales make their way to the islands.
Peak whale watching season on Oahu is typically from January to March. All in all, that’s a decent chunk of time to see these magnanimous creatures!
Why Do Humpback Whales Migrate to Oahu?
Humpback whales migrate to Hawaii to raise their young. Typically, they call the cold waters of Alaska home, but this environment is too harsh for them as newborns.
If you think about it, Hawaii is almost like a nursery for baby whales. Once they’re old enough to journey back to Alaska, they migrate back!
What’s the Best Time of Day to See Whales on Oahu?
The best time of day to see whales on Oahu is usually in the early morning or late afternoon. Many whale-watching cruises occur at these times, as it’s the most optimal time to spot them. The weather and waves are typically calmer at these times, which can tend to draw them out.
What Kind of Whales Can I See on Oahu?
Many types of whales call Oahu home! Humpback whales are the most common whales to spy on Oahu. You may also see pilot whales, sperm whales, or blue whales, though those sightings are much less common.
Humpback whales migrate to Oahu every year to breed and give birth to their young. If you are here during peak whale watching months, keep your eyes peeled. You might just spot some baby whales, known as keiki (pronounced kay-kay).
Pilot whales are another common whale seen in Hawaii. You can easily spy them from their distinctive bulbous heads and sleek, almost dolphin-like bodies. They love to have friendly interactions with boats, too, so don’t be surprised if you see one swim up close to you!
Do I Have to Go On a Whale Watching Tour to See Whales?
No! You can certainly see whales on your own on Oahu, too. Many people spot whales right from the beach! Your vacation rental balcony could be a great vantage point, too. Some other great places to stake out are Hanauma Bay, the Makapu’u Lighthouse, and Diamond Head.
If you happen to see a whale from the beach (or while swimming), be sure to remain respectful and mind Hawaii’s rules regarding these creatures. Regulations prohibit boats from approaching within 100 yards of a whale, and you should never swim with or touch whales or any other marine mammals.
Can I Go On a Whale Watching Tour?
You sure can. One of our favorites is the Ko Olina Whale Watching Tour. Going on a tour is a great idea because the guides can take you to their favorite areas and give you the best chance of seeing as many whales as possible!
Hopping aboard a boat tour for a whale watch lets you get closer than you would be onshore. You can also learn interesting, fun facts from your guide!

Whichever company you choose to go with for your whale-watching tour, make sure you do your research. With so many companies available, you want to know the company you choose is responsible and focuses on the well-being and conservation of Oahu’s whales.
Whale Conservation in Hawaii
As we mentioned, it’s important to remain aware and respectful when you visit Hawaii. Whale conservation is hugely important in Hawaii. The state has special Marina Protected Areas (MPAs) dedicated to providing a sanctuary for the whales and preserving their feeding and breeding grounds.
Be careful to heed local laws and warnings surrounding whales, and always remember to keep your distance. Much of the danger to whales stems directly from human impact—climate change, ocean pollution, and other disturbances caused by human activities. If we all do our part, we can ensure a safer, cleaner environment for whales in Oahu. Our dedication to keeping them safe will lead to many more whale seasons for years to come!
