Don’t Miss These Rainy-Day Activities on Oahu
Oahu is well-known for its breathtaking scenery, gorgeous beaches, and stunning natural beauty. There’s so much to do while you’re here! Though the island is known for its incredible weather, there are, of course, rainy days.
If you run into some weather for a day or two during your trip to Oahu, don’t worry! There are plenty of things to do when it’s raining in Oahu.
Let’s explore some of our favorite rainy-day activities on Oahu so you can make the most of your trip!
When is Rainy Season On Oahu?
Before we start, it’s good to know what you’re in for before you book a trip. The Hawaiian islands all experience a rainy season due to northeast trade winds and their general mountainous terrain. The rainy season in Hawaii typically lasts from November to March! This holds true for the island of Oahu—November through March will be the rainiest, with the winter months experiencing the most precipitation.
The good news is that most of these showers are quite short! We’ve all seen photos of iconic rainbows over Hawaii. Rainbows occur often due to the short nature of the rain that comes to the islands! Even when it is raining, the temperature remains quite comfortable.
That means that you can explore these rainy-day activities for a bit, and once you’re done, you can get back to enjoying the outdoors again! Sounds like a great vacation to us.
Visit the Pearl Harbor Memorial
Pearl Harbor took place on December 7th, 1941, on the island of Oahu. This was a pivotal moment in United States history, precipitating its entrance into World War II. The Pearl Harbor National Memorial serves to memorialize this major piece of history and commemorate the lives lost in the Pearl Harbor Attack.
The museums and grounds of the Pearl Harbor Memorial are completely free! You do need to reserve a time to see the USS Arizona Memorial, but the reservation fee is only $1. Visit the Pearl Harbor Museum to learn more about the history and culture that surrounded this important part of the history of the United States—and the world.
Have a Drink with Ko Hana Distillers
Sometimes, the best thing to do on a rainy day is to sit back, relax, and enjoy a good drink. You can do just that at Ko Hana Distillery!
Enjoy the best Hawaiian Agricole rum on Oahu and try all sorts of new flavors when you stop in here. You can take a tour of the distillery and sample classic rum, aged rum, or cocktails! We can’t think of a better way to spend a rainy day than enjoying deliciously authentic Hawaiian spirits.
Explore the Disney Aulani Resort
You don’t have to be a guest at the Disney Aulani Resort to enjoy the spas, dining, and shopping on-site! Get the best of both worlds when you stay with us at Oceanfront and pop over to Disney Aulani for a quick spa or shopping day.
If you’re looking to unwind, a spa day sounds like the perfect opportunity, doesn’t it? The Laniwai Spa at Disney Aulani provides the perfect setting to relax and rejuvenate. Try signature treatments like Kilikili (Fine Gentle Rain) or Wai Lomilomi, or go for a skincare session to leave your skin glowing. If you’re traveling with your partner, you can even book a couples massage and relax together!
Disney Aulani also has a ton of great shops to explore. If you want to get in a little retail therapy, it’s the perfect place to stop by! There are a wide variety of shops at the resort, whether you’re looking for beach day essentials or high-fashion items. Hale Manu is not to be missed if you want to find high-end fashion or jewelry. You might just find the perfect gift to bring back home!
There are also a number of great restaurants at the Disney Aulani Resort! Stop in for a bite to eat while it’s raining, and maybe you’ll even see a rainbow by the end of your meal. Ama‘ama has wonderful contemporary island cooking, and Makahiki is another great option. You may even see a Disney character when you grab breakfast there!
Iolani Palace
The Iolani Palace is one of the most famous attractions on Oahu. It’s the perfect place to spend a rainy day and learn more about the island’s history.
Iolani Palace is the official residence of Hawaii’s monarchy and provides great insight into the history of the islands and their rulers. This National Historic Landmark was built in 1882 by the last king of Hawaii, King Kalākaua. It has been meticulously restored to appear as it did in the 1800s. Step back in time as you take in the magnificent state apartments, including the Blue Room, State Dining Room, and Throne Room.
You can even hear the poignant story of Queen Liliuokalani’s imprisonment in a bedroom upstairs of the palace after the monarchy was overthrown. Visiting the Iolani Palace will teach you much about Hawaiian history and is definitely worth the stop!
Admission to Iolani Palace varies on what tour you’re looking to take. You can take a self-led audio tour, or follow along as a docent guides you through the palace. Check out the price of their admission and tour options on their website!
